In this article, we explore the roots of this British favourite, along with our top tips and recipes for creating your own delicious curry night, including some cracking fakeaway curry ideas. We'll also show you our flavour-packed, faff-free options for those nights you’re craving a quick curry, so you can enjoy the deliciousness without the hard work (or a takeaway menu!).
History Behind The Curry Capital
Bradford is famous for many things, but its status as the UK's curry capital is a title we all love to celebrate. And just like Morrisons, which also has its roots in Bradford, this love of good food is part of our DNA.
This September, the city's rich curry heritage takes centre stage with the return of the World Curry Festival. Founded in 2008 by Bradford’s own Zulfi Karim, this two-week celebration of food, culture, and community is a real highlight of the year. The festival has become a brilliant platform for 'gastro-diplomacy,' using food to bring people together and inspire change.
This festival is a real celebration of our shared heritage with delicious food, and we think everyone should get in on the festivities!

Bringing the Festival Home
Who says the flavour of the festival has to stay in Bradford? We're bringing the spice, warmth, and goodness of the World Curry Festival straight to your kitchen. This autumn at Morrisons, we're joining in the celebration with our Curry Festival event, so you can too. In line with our cuisines programme, we will be running our Curry Festival event from Monday, 22nd September to Sunday, 12th October, capturing both the World Curry Festival and National Curry Week, which starts on 6th October. Within this event, products linked to this cuisine will be on promotion in-store, supported by impactful marketing, so you can easily find all the amazing offers. We've even got some tasty innovations on our Market Street, like our new chicken tikka naan pizza and a variety of spicy snacks to celebrate the occasion, the Morrisons way!
Top Tips for a Flavour-Filled Curry
After all that talk of curry, fancy trying your hand at making your own authentic curry? We've got the secrets to a cracking curry night right here. Get ready to cook and explore our top tips for a flavour-filled curry that tastes brilliant, every time.
Build a Flavour Foundation: The key to a brilliant curry starts with a good base. Take your time when cooking your onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté them on a low-to-medium heat until the onions are soft and translucent. Remember to take your time and don't rush this step.
Toast Your Spices: Before adding any liquid, cook your dry spices (like cumin, coriander, and turmeric) in a little oil for a minute. This blooms the spices, releasing their full, vibrant flavour and aroma. It's a game-changer!
Master the Tomato: When using tinned or fresh tomatoes, make sure you cook them down until they form a thick, dark paste. This removes the
raw, watery taste and creates a deep, rich foundation for your sauce.
Low and Slow Is the Way to Go: After you've added your main ingredients and liquid, let the curry simmer gently. This slow cooking process allows all the flavours to meld together beautifully. The longer you can let it bubble away (within reason!), the better it will taste.
Add Cream at the End: If your curry calls for yogurt, cream, or coconut milk, stir it in towards the very end of the cooking process. Adding it too early, especially on a high heat, can sometimes cause it to split.
The Final Balance: Before you serve, have a taste and be your own chef! A squeeze of lemon or lime juice can brighten the flavour, a pinch of sugar can balance any acidity, and a final sprinkle of salt is essential.
A Fresh Finish: Turn off the heat and stir in a handful of fresh herbs like coriander or mint. The heat from the
curry will gently warm them, and they'll add a vibrant, fresh flavour that really finishes the dish off.
These little tricks are the difference between a good curry and a great one!
